Hello friends! Katy here with a stencil resist technique using Gel Medium. This is similar to emboss resist I am simply changing out the clear embossing powder with transparent/translucent gel medium.

I used the Gingko’s stencil with Color Hive Inks in Yellowstone and English Mustard and a blending brush on some heavyweight white cardstock.

This technique is really quick and easy and a great way to stretch your supplies.

I have a video for you below. If you cannot see the video, click here to watch on Youtube.

Couple things about this technique. First, be sure and use a dye based ink for your resist. Remember, pigment ink sits on the surface. To make sure you don’t risk covering up you resist technique, always use a dye based ink. Second, make sure what ever Gel Medium you use, the label says transparent or translucent. This means it will dry clear and your colors will shine through. There are a couple different ones, Gloss, Heavy Gloss and Matte. Gloss and Heavy Gloss (which is what I used) will have a glossy shine once dried. If you do not like or want the shine, use Matte. Just do not use Opaque Gel or Paste, those dry white.

I used Memento Rich Cocoa for my first layer of brown and then applied Delicata Ink in Celestial Copper to give a bronze, coppery finish. Great colors for fall!

Here is an up close photo showing the shimmer and shine of the Gel Medium and Delicata Ink.

One more tip before I go. I used 48lb Vellum and gold embossing powder for my sentiment which comes from the Floating Gingkos Stamp Set. I recommend using a piece of double sided adhesive the same width and length as your Vellum sentiment strip. This will keep your adhesive “hidden”. In the photo you can see my adhesive. I used 1/4 inch strips of double sided tape. This particular look does not bother me and gives the Vellum a bit of texture almost like a ribbon. Just keep this in mind if you don’t like to see your adhesive.
